Charatan, Barling, Ferndown and Other Pipes

Allthough my main interest in older pipes has been on Dunhills & Comoy's, I have over the years purchased pipes made by various other makers and they are featured on this page. Most have been added over the years just as smoking pipes and I have labelled these "Smokers." Others have been added to the collection either for their beauty or indeed oddity!

Charatan

Frederick Charatan created the brand in 1863 and opened a shop in Mansell Street London and later moved to Prescott Street. It was always a small family business with only a small annual production until the 1950's when Herman Lane assumed distribution of the make in the USA in 1955 and it became hugely popular. In the 1980's Lane sold the company to Dunhill and the Prescott Street factory closed in 1982 and thereafter the fame and quality of the make declined. The pre-Lane period prior to 1950 and the Lane era pipes are the only two that interest the collector.

Barling

One of the oldest pipe brands made in London. Those pipes made by the family before they sold out to the Imperial Tobacco Company are highly prized and sought out by collectors. This period before 1962 is known as the "pre transition" period. I have never been a Barling collector but have acquired a few over the years.

Ferndown

Les Wood is famed as the foremost silver smith for pipes in the UK and does work for many brands including Dunhill. He worked at Dunhill for 25 years and eastablished his own business with his wife Dolly in the early 1980's. His early pipes were sold under the name Ellwood but are now branded Ferndown which is the name of their house. The mouthpieces are stamped LJS and the silver or gold bands have the stamp L&JS

Kaywoodie

I was introduced to the Kaywoodie brand by my great friend Dennis Moore who wrote a definative guide of the make for Pipes & Tobacco magazine and has the most amazing collection. I am not a great fan of the "drinkless filter" for which Kaywoodie are famed and two of mine have been removed which I find suits me better.

GBD

The GBD brand was created in France in 1851 by three artisans Ganneval, Bondier & Donninger. Pipes were not produced in England until 1903 when they set up a factory run by Oppenheimer. Since 1981 the brand has been owned by Cadogan. I have never collected or studied the history of the brand but have acquired a few over the years.

Astleys

Astleys were one of the famous old English tobacconists who opened their first shop in 1862. Initially at 109 Jermyn Street and then at 16 Piccadilly Arcade. They never made any pipes but contracted many famous names like Charatan, Comoy and GBD, then more recently Ashton, Les Wood and Upshall to make pipes for them. Unfortunately they closed a few years ago. The lovely pair below probably date from pre WW2.

I originally thoght that Astleys changed the stamp when they moved to 16 Piccadilly Arcade but thanks to a reader have been corrected and now know that the stamp 109 Jermyn Street was used until they finally closed.

Rich Lewis

Rich Lewis is in my view one of the finest current pipemakers in America, if not the world. His pipes are all beautifully engineered and provide a superb smoke. He is located in Minneapolis and further examples of his work can be seen on his web site at:-
