Ashton Pipes

William Ashton Taylor  joined Dunhills as an apprentice in 1959 at the age of 15 and worked his way up the company from a floor sweeper to Master pipe maker and then Supervisor and finally as Manager of Dunhills strict quality control department. In 1983 Bill decided to set up as a pipe maker on his own and has gone from strength to strength producing some of the most desirable pipes available. All Ashton pipes are made entirely by hand and are treated to oil curing using an oil developed by Bill. This oil curing produces a pipe that requires no breaking in and which smokes with a lovely sweet nutty flavour. Bill also developed his own material for his hand cut mouthpieces which he calls Ashtonite. This is a blend of vulcanite and plexiglas or brindle. These mouthpieces do not tarnish like vulcanite and are softer on the teeth than plexiglas on it's own.

The pipes made by William Ashton Taylor are in my view the finest smoking pipes made today and I am fortunate to count him as a close friend and to be able to visit him in his workshop. Every pipe bought has been an absolute joy from day one and they are my most frequent every day smoking pipes.

Illustrated above and in the detail photos below is without doubt my favourite pipe. It is an Ashton Sovereign Magnum made in 2004. It measures 9.5 inches long and has the most beautiful birdseye grain on the two sides as can be seen. It has been a magnificent smoking pipe from the first bowl.

A selection of Ashton smooth pipes all Sovereigns with the exception of a Claret top right and Gilt Edge centre. The pipe in the middle on the right is a rare Straight Grain 3.

A selection of Ashton Pebble Shell pipes with an Old Church centre left and a Quaint, bottom right made for my 70th Birthday!
Many Ashton Shells have a deep blast remeniscent of the 1920's Dunhills. This makes them very light for their size.

Two recent additions

Ashton Quaint xxx Wonderful flower shape.

Ashton Pebblegrain Churchwarden with silver cap and button on the underside. 10.75 inches long.
